After a three-week visit to Delbarton School, a Benedictine school in Morristown, New Jersey, USA, four Transition Year students – Eoin Bergin, Patrick Geraghty, Tim Molony and Daniel O’Donovan – have now returned to Ireland for the Christmas holidays.
Two students from Delbarton came over to Ireland for three weeks last summer, and they and two other students and their families hosted the four Glenstal boys for the past three weeks. The Irish group travelled to the USA with Fr Fintan on 29 November, and returned with Br Martin on 22 December.
The TY students enjoyed excursions to New York (including the Top of the Rock, the top of the Empire State Building, the 9/11 Memorial and Les Misérables on Broadway) and Philadelphia, as well as a three day ‘road-trip’ to Washington DC with the two exchange coordinators Fr Edward Seton of Delbarton and Br Martin from Glenstal. In Washington they tapped into some Delbarton connections for access to several sites that casual tourists rarely see. The group toured the White House, beautifully decorated for Christmas, the US Capitol, and the Pentagon. When not on the road, the Glenstallions enjoyed attending classes, exceptional New Jersey retail therapy and many and varied sporting events.
On the evening of December 17, Delbarton Headmaster Br Paul Diveny OSB hosted a farewell dinner to thank the Delbarton hosts and bid farewell to their Glenstal guests. There was genuine camaraderie in the air as host families connected and the American and Irish friends prepared for final goodbyes.
Many thanks to Fr Edward Seton, Br Paul and above all the host students and families at Delbarton for their wonderful hospitality.
