Family Weekend in Westport – April 22nd to 24th

Julian-Dad-and-Brother Famine-Boat Clew-BayAbout 110 Glenstal Abbey School parents, guardians, boys and new parents went to the Family Weekend which was held once again in Westport.

We stayed in the wonderful Hotel Westport where the staff looked after everyone royally. The food, the rooms and the hotel facilities were excellent and many thanks to Cathal Hughes for his kindness to us.

On Saturday, there were three main activities, the Greenway Cycle, the Croagh Patrick climb and for those who just wanted to chill, there was the Health Spa and Pool to rest up.

There are photographs in the Photos section and as you can see the day was glorious. The stunning pictures that the Reilly’s took from the top of Croagh Patrick show how spectacular it is with the views of Clew Bay in the background.

Most people were able to manage the Greenway cycle all the way from Westport to Achill and indeed some were able to make the return journey….and all in glorious sunshine. There is nowhere like Westport when the sun shines.

Fr. William travelled to Westport on Saturday evening and said mass for everyone in the Hotel. Cathal Hughes hosted a reception for the Glenstal adults while the boys and girls headed off to dinner.

The adults soon followed and enjoyed the gourmet food in the restaurant.

This was followed by a sing along in the bar led by Br. Denis who was helped out by Jack Grey, Scott McKeown and Philip Reiche.

Sunday breakfast was a leisurely affair as most people slept it out after the exertions of the previous day.

The Glenstal bus headed off at noon and there were a lot of boys nodding off in the way back.

All in all another great Family Weekend, the fourth such weekend. It is a wonderful time for families to get together and enjoy the company of each other in a very enjoyable atmosphere.

The Family Weekend is now a permanent fixture on the school calendar and hopefully will be so for a long time to come.

Special thanks to Pat Aylward for his help in the logistics of the entire weekend. Thanks also to everyone who supported the Family Weekend. A collection was made for the school’s Kenyan trip which Fr. John will acknowledge in due course.

Until the next Family Weekend…Croagh-2
