First Year Retreat

Liam O’Sullivan & Tadgh Magner (1st Year)

first-yearOn the 8th of October, the first year students went on retreat at Glenstal. At 3 pm we all met up outside the school and were brought to the O’Brien Room of the Monastic Library by Mr Kieran Sparling. Brother Colmán welcomed us and introduced the idea of “retreat”.  Kieran lead a workshop on Community Values at Glenstal and the Eucharist. Brother Colmán then spoke to us about Saint Benedict and his life and the founding of a monastic community.

After the talk, Brother Colmán lead the group around the grounds of Glenstal, explaining to us about the many castles and former families who lived in Glenstal. We also saw the Walled Gardens, Lady Garden and the Deer Park which was really fascinating.

Later we went down into the Glen and walked to the Mass Rock where we saw many carvings. One being a carving of St. Bernard, the only one in Ireland. We had heaps of fun and also learnt a lot. Thanks to Mr. Kieran Sparling and Brother Colmán for making this day possible.
