Fr. Ambrose Tinsley died in the early hours of Tuesday morning, September 24th. Fr. Ambrose had been ill for quite some time and died peacefully in the tender care of the staff in Milford Hospice in Castletroy.
Fr. Ambrose, pictured in choir (with the beard) was a constant presence in Glenstal and on a number of occasions in the past 30 years he narrowly cheated death. However, he knew that there was no way back from his latest illness to which he succumbed peacefully on Tuesday last.
Fr. Ambrose was born in Dublin and went to school in Blackrock College. As a monk, he worked in Glenstal Abbey School in the 1960’s as Inter Housemaster but most of his monastic life here was spent as Guestmaster. He was quiet in his manner and an excellent counsellor, as countless guests to Glenstal will attest. He had quite a following of people of all ages and from all aspects of life. He was always available to listen to anyone who called to the monastery.
He will be greatly missed by his family, his community and his legion of admirers and followers.
His removal from Milford Hospice to Glenstal will be on Thursday September, 26th followed by his funeral mass here in the Abbey Church at 11.30am on Friday. The monks will hold a constant Vigil beside his coffin in the Church from Vespers on Thursday until Morning Office on Friday. He will be buried in the Monastery Graveyard.
