Glenstal Senior Volleyball

Glenstal’s sporting horizons were broadened again when twelve 5th year students made the journey to Villiers Secondary School to participate in a Volleyball game. Spearheaded by captain Philip Reiche, the enthusiastic bunch made a winning start to their volleyball careers winning 3 sets to 2 overall. Credit must be given to the opposition who were made up of younger players, mainly from 3rd and 4th year. Villiers were well supported by their home crowd but the Glenstal men had enough firepower to come away with the win.

Glenstal began the first game relatively well and after some initial nerves in a tightly fought game throughout, Glenstal won 25 to 22. The second game proceeded in a similar manner but midway through the game, Glenstal pulled away to win 25 to 15. Controlled and well executed play was evident among the Villiers players and this finally paid dividends in the 3rd game. Glenstal errors were now costing points when repeated carrying / palming of the ball resulted in a 25 to 9 victory for the home team. Villiers ensured a deciding set would be necessary when, in the 4th set, they emerged victorious on a score line of 25 to 12. Erroneous Glenstal play needed to be eradicated if they were to capitalise on the good start they had made. Communication to one another on incoming opposition ball needed to improve and service faults needed to be removed.

A deciding set was to be played and Glenstal regained their composure. Good set up play, was not only seen in this game but there was glimpses throughout, enabled the likes of Zac Thompson and Philip Reiche to smash points in Glenstal’s favour. Couple that with superb service efforts from Philip Reiche and Conán O’Sullivan, Glenstal built up a commanding lead. Villiers did close the gap somewhat midway through the set but good all round skills from the panel ensured that they would earn the victory in the deciding set of the game.
