Glenstal Seniors v The Barbarians

On Wednesday the 8th of November, the Barbarians arrived in Murroe to avail of Glenstal Abbey’s senior squad’s pitch, the Mulcair, which they had been told was one of the best surfaces in the city and would have remained playable despite the wretched weather. They were in town to play against Tonga in Thomond Park on the Friday night. When one of their management team had made contact with the school earlier in the day, inquiring about the pitch’s availability, he was informed that the senior squad was due to train at 14:30 that afternoon, the same time they were looking to train, although the senior squad would be happy to share the pitch.

After the offer had been given the seal of approval by Baa-Baas head coach Robbie Deans, arrangements were made and it was agreed that both teams would have an opportunity to run some phase-plays against each other. The session went extremely well, with both sets of players enjoying the uniqueness of the occasion, our own boys revelling in the opportunity to showcase their skills against some of the top international players in the world, and those very players including Fijian flyer Taqele Naiyaravoro and All Blacks superstar Julian Savea enjoying the novelty of pitting themselves against enthusiastic schoolboys in East Limerick. Overall it was a fantastic occasion for the school’s rugby programme, with all other age-grades getting an opportunity to watch parts of the session and most importantly take a few selfies with the Baa-Baas upon its conclusion.
