Glenstal V St Munchins

SCT Match Report

Mark Fleming

The SCT and JCT squads played St Munchins in Corbally on Wednesday 19th October. During the warm up both teams, together with teams from St Munchins, were called upon to partake in a minutes silence as a mark of respect for the late Anthony Foley.   All teams gathered on the halfway line facing towards the school in memory of the Munster Rugby Head Coach. After the mark of respect both SCT teams set up and the game kicked off.

The SCT sported their new kit for the match. The home side kicked off with Glenstal receiving well and exiting their half of the pitch on the terms they wanted. After a ferocious start to the game from both sides , Glenstal’s Jamie Mawhinney touched down under the post after a brilliant rolling maul from Glenstal. A penalty saw Munchins get their first points of the game. With the momentum on their side Munchins bagged a try after a mesmerizing piece of play that saw them in beside the corner flag. Now 10-7 down Glenstal needed to hit back but an intercept try saw Munchins get a 10 point lead in the game. A late penalty from Fly-half Ben Healy got the game down to a converted try.

img_7078After the break a few Glenstal penalties forced Munchins into the ten point buffer zone once again. Now desperate, Glenstal turned up the heat and started moving into their game plan that had been devised by head coach Sean Skehan. Converted tries from centre Luke Fitzgerald and replacement Declan Floyd were set up from the quick handling skills of prop forward Sean Garry. These tries turned the tide and the advantage swayed in the away side’s favour. Another penalty from Munchins near the latter stages of the game made it a one point game with everything to play for, including a place in the Limerick City Cup final. After attacking, Munchins were awarded a penalty to kick for the posts to win the game. Unfortunately for the Corbally side the kick went wide and Glenstal won the game. Both sides shook hands and thanked each other for the exhilarating fixture.
