Uiseann Cooke swims for Bronze

Mayfield Swimming Gala

I’mUiseann currently swimming with Limerick Swimming Club and I recently competed in a Gala in Mayfield, Co. Cork on Saturday, 18th October. It was hosted by Dolphin Swimming Club. There was a few clubs there including Mallow Swans, Dolphin Swimming Club, Limerick S.C. and Sharks S.C. from Galway were also there.

It was my first chance to swim for Limerick Swimming Club and the first Gala of the swimming year 2014/2015. I was competing in three events: 100m Fly, 100m Individual Medley and 200m Backstroke. The warm-up was at 9:00 a.m. It went on until 10:00 a.m. My first event was the 100m Fly. The 800 free and 50 back were before my first event, I was waiting for a while but the time flew while I was talking and getting to know some of the other people in the club. I was in the 2nd heat. I felt a bit nervous before the race but as soon I hit the water all my nerves left me. As I came down the last 25m I felt as if I couldn’t breathe but as soon as I got out of the water, I didn’t feel as exhausted.

Immediately after the race I asked the timekeeper what did I get? The time was 1.18. I was a little disappointed with that time but later I was called out for the U-12 100m fly final.

Before each race the coach gives everybody advice on the race that you’re doing next and then feedback afterwards. There was a big time gap between the 100m Fly and 100m Individual Medley (all four strokes). We went to have some lunch. Next up for me was the 100 I.M. which is where you swim all the strokes for 25 meters in a particular order: Butterfly, Backstroke, Breaststroke and then Freestyle. The time I got was 1.16. I was reasonably happy with that time. Later on I found out that I came 3rd.

Limerick Swimming Club got 1st, 2nd and 3rd.The medal ceremony was right before my final race: the 200m backstroke. It was a great Gala for me to get a chance to meet the other members of the Club and I can’t wait for the next Gala!!!

There are some photos of the Gala in the Gallery Section of the school website.
