It was set to be a great Quarter Final match in the Munster Senior Cup between Glenstal and Castletroy. The venue for the match was Old Crescent RFC grounds in Rosbrien. Glenstal were slightly the favourites for this contest because they had beaten Castletroy twice already in the season. Casltetroy were not to be underestimated.
The match started slowly but in the 4th minute Castletroy got a good maul going but was taken down. The scrum half then sent a box kick very high with not too much depth. The winger from Castletroy rose above the Glenstal players to make a great catch. The Castletroy winger then paced along the wing to score the first try of the match. It was then converted and the score was 7-0 to Castletroy.
Glenstal fired back 7 minutes later. In the 12th minute Glenstal got a scrum 10 metres from the Castletroy line. It was spread well along the backs. When it reached the Tim Costigan he delayed the pass by a split second to then pop the ball to Colm Hogan who powered over the line. It was then converted by the on-form Jack Stafford. Which then put Glenstal and Castletroy level at 7-7.
In the 27th minute Castletroy had a chance to pull away with a penalty. It was taken well by their Out Half whose kicking had been of a very high standard.
Then on the stroke of half time Jack Stafford had the chance to draw with a penalty so that the teams could go into the half time break level. The kick dropped agonisingly short of the bar.
The half time score was 10-7 in favour of Castletroy and there were no scores in the Second Half.
The second half was a very boring one. The most compelling thing that happened was a minor “handbags” between the two sides towards the end of the game. It was of no consequence and the referee intervened quickly.
The Full Time score finished 10-7 in favor of Castletroy. A disappointing loss for Glenstal but a good win to start the Munster Senior Cup for Castletroy.
Glenstal are now due to play Crescent Comprehensive College in the Second Quarter Final. The game is due to be played under lights in Thomond Park on February 11th. Once this is confirmed it will be posted on the School Calander.
No doubt that Tom Tierney, Simon Malone and Sean Skehan will be working the Senior Squad hard between now and the must-win Crescent game.
Photos of the game by Jack Clancy, Robert Sweeney and Mikey Higgins are can be seen on the Photos Section of the School Website.
