Senior B Volleyball League – Round 1 Report

A group of 12 Transition Year students travelled to Mountrath in County Laois to participate in the 1st round of the Senior B Volleyball League on Thursday, November 9th. It would be all of these students’ first competitive experience of school’s volleyball and so a lot of learning was to be expected. That was to be the script as Glenstal were defeated in their 2 games without winning a set.

First up was Portlaoise College who had won their first game 2 sets to 1. Portlaoise proved far too strong with Glenstal floundering. Glimpses of good play were sparse but they were evidence that Glenstal were learning through the play and through the help and instructions of the officials at least. Of note were the performances of William Lacy, Michael O Donnell, Brian Hirooka and Cian O’Farrell in the first set. That said, Glenstal were defeated in the first two sets and Portlaoise College claimed their second victory of the day. The score in each set was 25-8 and 25-7 respectively.

With all 12 players experiencing a full set in the first game, it was hoped that Glenstal may fair better in the second game. Still, errors and fouls cost Glenstal dearly and gave the opposition, Mountrath Community School, the advantage they needed to win. Lifting, net infringements and serving faults were all causing Glenstal huge difficulties.

However, Glenstal did improve in this game. The score at one stage during the first set was 17 points to 13 and there was a feeling that Glenstal may be able to come back to win the set. However, Mountrath Community School powered on and never allowed Glenstal to get close enough to mount a challenge. That set finished 25 points to 19 in favour of the hosts. The final set was competitive for a time also. Leading 9 points to 7, Mountrath quenched any chance of a Glenstal win when they began to turn up the heat. They, again, surged into a commanding lead and claimed the set 25 points to 10. As a result, they won the game.

Of note in this game were 3 points in a row from the service of Aidan Booth, a block and a smash on separate occasions from Cian O’Farrell to earn another 2 points and better team skills shown by all players in general play e.g. using the dig and volley. It will no doubt be a learning experience for the boys and will stand to them in future competitions. Well done to the boys who participated on the day.
