Under 14 Hurling

Glenstal returned to the U14 C hurling final again this year but on this occasion it was by default. Last year, they progressed from the group stages to make the final but this year, only SMI Newcastlewest and Glenstal Abbey School made it to the competition day and so they would contest the final.

A glorious day in Mick Neville Park saw Glenstal suffer a comprehensive defeat for the second year in in a row. Again, the opposition were far too strong for this division and the final was a no contest. Glenstal will hope for better fortune in future years when divisions will be graded more appropriately as it was evident from start to finish, that SMI Newcastlewest were a class above Glenstal. That said, the boys gave it their best efforts in parts and maintained high spirits when the easy option was to quit and complain.

The match was over as a contest when Glenstal, against the wind in the first half, conceded a multitude of scores. Despite this, Iarlaith Reilly pulled off some good saves in goals while captain Cormac Frawley led by example out the field causing SMI a good deal of trouble. Cormac Frawley was excellent under the high ball fielding 3 or 4 catches to set up Glenstal attacks. However, these attacks never turned into scores. Adam White and Patrick Johnson were working tirelessly to clear their lines but there was no stopping the SMI onslaught.

In the second half, Glenstal were more competitive. Playing with the wind, it was the inspirational Cormac Frawley who went past a number of SMI players before rifling a shot just underneath the crossbar. Minutes later, Cormac Frawley pointed from distance to earn another deserved score. Angus McDonald had taken over goalkeeping duties and his long puck outs were a good asset to the outfield players. Robert McNamara worked admirably in the middle of the field for the day and got a well earned score when he pointed from the right hand side of the goal. That would be all for Glenstal as they found themselves losing their second hurling final in as many years.

Well done to the participating boys who gave it their best shot.
