Congratulations to Lucas Bachmann who has won the Fergus Gaines Cup in the Irish Mathematical Olympiad. An outstanding achievement for Lucas and for Glenstal Abbey School. This is the top award in Mathematics in Ireland and it follows years of hard work by Lucas and his Glenstal Abbey School Mathematics teachers.
It didn't all happen overnight for Lucas and the following is an account of his progress to be the very best student of Mathematics in Ireland.
In 2016, Lucas was a 3rd year student in Glenstal Abbey School. He was the only person in Ireland to achieve a top score in Round 1 of the Maths Olympiad. Following that, he became the only 3rd year, at that time at least, to make it on the Roll of Honour. He placed 22nd in that year. Given Lucas was competing against 4th, 5th and 6th year students and it was his first time participating, this was a very solid indication of his incredible potential.
In 2017, Lucas achieved another perfect score in Round 1 and climbed to 9th place in the Roll of Honour that year.
In 2018, Lucas again achieved a perfect score in Round 1 and climbed to 2nd place on the Roll of Honour. Not only that but Lucas won a Bronze international Olympiad medal that summer time while representing Ireland.
In 2019, Lucas reached the summit and claimed 1st place on the Roll of Honour winning the Fergus Gaines Cup in the 32nd Irish Mathematical Olympiad. Lucas will travel to Bath in July to participate in the International Olympiad for 2019.
Along the way Lucas would have participated in many and various other Olympiads such as the Iranian Geometry Olympiad where in 2018, he won Bronze. These are all hugely challenging events and can be very long in duration. The commitment and ability shown by Lucas himself has been incredible. Of course, he continues to be very modest about it all, which is admirable. I wouldn't even be sure we know about all of his achievements, you would nearly need to interrogate him to know!
